About this Cycle Tour

Uganda is one of Africa’s most underrated safari destinations. We’re here to change that – by bike! This 10-day tour combines some of Uganda’s most magical wildlife encounters – including the unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking – with moderate-level cycling through highlands, savannahs, and rainforests. By day, we go off the beaten path for a deep dive into East African wilderness and local lifeways, and by night, we unwind in some of Uganda's cosiest lodges.

We meet in Entebbe, the international gateway to Uganda, and drive north to Fort Portal, where we begin cycling on red dirt trails through a landscape of tea plantations and stunning crater lakes. We then enter Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s prime safari destination, for a game drive and wetland boat cruise, with the chance to spot herds of elephants, tree-climbing lions, and wallowing hippos. Next, we cycle directly through the park’s savannah before transitioning into the green, rolling hills of southwestern Uganda. At Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, we take a break from cycling to trek into the thick, misty rainforest in search of mountain gorillas in their natural habitat. We then cycle out of the reserve and into a world of terraced agricultural fields, making our way to the serene, island-dotted Lake Bunyonyi. From here, we transfer north for a final safari by bike in Lake Mburo National Park – where zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and impalas roam the plains – before concluding the tour back in Entebbe.

Join us on this enchanting ride into the wilds of Uganda!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Entebbe for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We transfer for 6-7 hours to Fort Portal in western Uganda, nestled in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains. In the afternoon, we enjoy an undulating warm-up ride through small villages and tea plantations, before toasting to the start of our adventure with sundowners overlooking a crater lake.

Day 3

We cycle south from Fort Portal on red dirt roads through lush, hilly terrain to a stunning landscape of volcanic crater lakes. After a lakeside picnic and further cycling, we transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park, crossing the equator along the way.

Day 4

We explore Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda’s most popular wildlife reserve, with a game drive through savannahs and wetlands to spot elephants, giraffes, and perhaps even tree-climbing lions. In the afternoon, we cruise the Kazinga Channel, home to hippos, crocodiles, and buffalo, while birds of prey circle overhead.

Day 5

We cycle through the heart of Queen Elizabeth National Park, riding along a wide, relatively flat gravel road through savannah and forests. Keep an eye out for buffalo, antelope, giraffes, zebras and elephants roaming the plains. We spend the night at a cosy lodge on the park’s southern edge.

Day 6

We cycle from savannah to rainforest, passing plantain fields, coffee farms, and tea plantations. After lunch, a short transfer brings us to Buhoma, near Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home of Uganda’s mountain gorillas. Tonight’s stay at a guesthouse supporting Bwindi Community Hospital directly benefits the local community.

Day 7

Today, we set aside our bikes for the unforgettable experience of gorilla trekking with expert rangers in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. It’s all about being flexible as we navigate through the thick forest to find these incredible creatures in their natural habitat.

Day 8

We ride through Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, transitioning to terraced hillsides before descending to the shores of the island-dotted Lake Bunyonyi. After a lakeside lunch, we embark on a 4–5 hour transfer north, settling in at the edge of Lake Mburo National Park for the night.

Day 9

Our final ride takes us through Lake Mburo National Park, one of Uganda's smallest wildlife reserves, on a 40 km cycling safari. We may spot zebras, giraffes, buffalo, and hippos from the saddle. In the afternoon, we transfer back to Entebbe, where we treat ourselves to a farewell dinner.

Day 10

Extend your stay to discover more of Uganda or head to the airport for your onward flight.
