About this Cycle Tour

This heritage-infused bike tour takes you back in time on a route shaped by Siamese kingdom builders. From the rice paddy-covered, temple-studded Central Plains to the lush valleys and mountains of the North, we uncover some of Thailand’s most illustrious historical sites while immersing ourselves in the rustic beauty of its rural hinterlands and charming provincial towns. And there’s plenty of mouthwatering Thai cuisine, of course!

We begin our journey by leaving the skyscrapers of Bangkok behind and driving north into Thailand’s rice basket, where the first two days take us along the plains surrounding the Chao Phraya, the river of kings. Here, we explore the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ayutthaya—once a stately capital of pre-modern Siam and now a collection of captivating ruins that echo its former glory. We weave through rural communities and farmlands on backcountry roads before driving to Sukhothai, another UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the beautifully preserved vestiges of Thailand’s first Kingdom await. After an in-depth exploration of these ancient, hallowed grounds by bike, we transition to the mountainous north, spending a night in Phrae, once the centre of Thailand’s lucrative teak trade. Now in the cultural sphere of Lanna — the local name for northern Thailand — we spend two days cycling through an agrarian world shaped by Buddhist and animist beliefs. We conclude the journey with an off-saddle exploration of Chiang Mai, the vibrant cultural capital of northern Thailand.

Join us on this leisurely-paced bike tour to explore the diverse cultural regions and storied historical eras of Thailand!

Itinerary

Day 1

We transfer from Bangkok to begin our ride at Bang Pa-In, the former summer palace of Siamese kings. Cycling through riverside communities by the Chao Phraya River, we arrive at the UNESCO-listed Ayutthaya, where we explore the ruins of the once-great capital.

Day 2

We arc around Ayutthaya and cycle north through rice field covered plains surrounding the Chao Phraya River. Our ride concludes at a stunning temple housing a colossal gilded Buddha statue, after which we transfer to a charming lakeside resort in Uthai Thani Province.

Day 3

We visit a lively morning market before riding through the rustic countryside, passing rice paddies, villages, temples, and more of the Chao Phraya River. Our journey continues as we transfer to the ancient capital of Sukhothai, with a stop at the fortress city of Kamphaeng Phet along the way.

Day 4

In the morning we explore the stunning Sukhothai Historical Park. We ride along roads connecting ancient temples and stop to admire some of the most impressive ruins. In the afternoon we transfer to the northern town of Phrae, once the centre of Thailand's lucrative teak trade.

Day 5

After a transfer from Phrae, we enjoy a ride through Lampang Province’s countryside, with jungle-clad mountains as our backdrop. We visit an impressive fortified temple complex and spend the night at a northern Thai-style resort along the banks of the Wang River.

Day 6

A final transfer takes us into Lamphun Province, where we ride past longan orchards and through ancient towns before reaching Chiang Mai. In the evening, we head to dinner by Chiang Mai’s iconic public transport — the red truck, which you see cruising all around town!

Day 7

On our final morning, we visit the glittering mountaintop temple of Doi Suthep and the tranquil Buddhist forest retreat of Wat Umong. We bid our farewells over one last lunch together.

Reviews

Our guide carefully selected local restaurants and food for us to try that reflected the unique Lanna Thai food that I wouldn't have tried on my own.
