About this Cycle Tour

From the lofty peaks of the Truong Son Mountains to the sandy shores of the Gulf of Tonkin, this is a Vietnamese road cycling dream come true. Test your endurance over 1,000 kilometers of diverse terrain, uncovering vestiges of former empires, the lingering legacies of the Vietnam-America War, striking limestone formations, shimmering lagoons, and vibrant cultures. We go local in Vietnam’s further-flung regions and enjoy elevated comfort near some of the country’s most treasured UNESCO World Heritage Sites!

Starting with a transfer out of Vietnam’s bustling capital city, Hanoi, the tour is divided into 4 main stages:

Stage 1: Valleys of the North. We kick things off with a climb over the Thung Khe Pass and descend into the Mai Chau Valley, known for its lush rice paddies and charming ethnic stilt house villages. We then follow the course of the Song Ma River into the rolling hills of Thanh Hoa Province.

Stage 2: The Ho Chi Minh Highway. Over three days, we hit the pavement of this legendary highland highway. Constructed atop the trails of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail, the smooth tarmac allows for a fast-paced journey past jungle-clad mountains and expansive farmlands.

Stage 3: Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. We have a rest day to explore some of the world's most visually striking caves, underground rivers, and limestone formations.

Stage 4: The Central Coast. Over four days, we traverse coastal villages, scenic shorelines, and tranquil lagoons. In Vinh Moc, we visit a fascinating network of war-era tunnels; in Hue, we explore the glittering Imperial Citadel; and in Lang Co, we relax by the beach. After a winding climb up and down the iconic Hai Van Pass, the tour ends in Hoi An, renowned for its Old World charm.

Join us on this leg-testing deep-dive into the heart of Vietnam by road bike!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Hanoi and head out for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

Our first ride takes us through the scenic countryside and mountains of Hoa Binh Province. We conquer the climb up Thung Khe Pass and descend into the Mai Chau Valley, known for its lush rice paddies and charming ethnic stilt house villages.

Day 3

We ride through the rice paddies of Mai Chau and follow the gently flowing Song Ma River. After lunch, we traverse the lush rolling hills of Thanh Hoa Province and tackle two climbs before reaching the market town of Ngoc Lac.

Day 4

We join the Ho Chi Minh Highway for a fast-paced, undulating ride in the foothills of the Truong Son Mountains. Accompanied by views over mountains, farmlands, and forests we reach the small but lively riverside town of Thai Hoa.

Day 5

After an initial section on quiet, secondary roads we rejoin the Ho Chi Minh Highway at the “Kilometer Zero” milestone of the historic Ho Chi Minh Trail. We then continue to follow the highway through expansive farmlands to reach our secluded hotel in the district of Pho Chau.

Day 6

The longest ride of the tour, we cover nearly 190 km on the Ho Chi Minh Highway, heading towards Phong Nha - Ke Bang National Park. We’ll enjoy views of rugged, jungle-clad limestone towers and tackle a series of climbs before reaching a lakeside resort for some R&R.

Day 7

A day off the bikes to explore Phong Nha’s otherworldly cave network. We’ll explore Paradise Cave on foot and cruise into Phong Nha Cave by boat, taking in some of the world’s most intricate rock formations. The afternoon is free to relax at the resort.

Day 8

We part ways with the Ho Chi Minh Highway and head towards the South China Sea, riding on the coastal plains to the village of Vinh Moc. In the afternoon we visit the Vinh Moc Tunnels, an intricate network of underground passages used during the Vietnam-American War.

Day 9

The flattest ride of the tour takes us along the Central Vietnam coast, crossing bridges over estuaries and skirting the Tam Giang Lagoon, part of Southeast Asia’s largest lagoon system. After arriving in Hue, we explore the UNESCO World Heritage-listed “Imperial City.”

Day 10

From Hue’s city streets, we head back to the coast, with a highlight being a detour through the “City of Ghosts,” a vast cemetery with ornate mausoleums. After passing through Cau Hai Lagoon, we end the ride at the white-sand Lang Co Beach.

Day 11

We start with a warm-up loop around a picturesque lagoon before tackling the 10 km ascent of the iconic Hai Van Pass. After a thrilling descent into Da Nang, we continue on to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed town of Hoi An.

Day 12

Our cycling tour has ended but we suggest you extend your stay another day or two to explore Hoi An.
