About this Cycle Tour

Vietnam’s long S-shaped stretch of coastline and its spine of jagged inland mountains create a cultural and natural diversity with few parallels in the world: with 54 ethnic groups, a staggering ecological variety, and a multiplicity of climates and terrain, it's easy to see why Vietnam has long proven irresistible to explorers! Cycling is the ideal way to experience this richness. The bicycle fits perfectly into the local way of life, where the roads are communal spaces shared by all, whether it’s an entire family loaded onto a single motorbike, a wedding tent packed with well-wishers, or a farmer leading a gigantic water buffalo to the rice fields.

Our adventure traces the historic expansion of the Vietnamese nation from its origins in the north near Hanoi, all the way to its counterpoint southern city, Saigon (officially Ho Chi Minh City). Leaving the nation’s capital, we ride among the surreal geological forms of Ninh Binh and delve into the natural refuge of Cuc Phuong Park, which strives to protect the rare species of the region. Making use of the iconic Vietnamese train system, we rest in comfortable berths and wake up in Dong Hoi, then cycle to preserved tunnels of the Viet Cong and across the wartime dividing line between North and South Vietnam. The imperial capital of Hue encapsulates layers of Vietnamese history that we will discover as we ride among its landmarks and serene rivers. Soaring above Da Nang on the Hai Van Pass, we will enter the heart of central Vietnam in the ancient trading port of Hoi An, with its commingled influences from near and far, and the Hindu Cham site of My Son, which offers glimpses into a lost empire. The abundance of Vietnam’s farmland and fisheries is evident everywhere in the rural regions around Quang Ngai, Quy Nhon, and Tuy Hoa, each of which also has prosperous urban centres that draw us into the exuberant modern side of Vietnam. Dynamic coastal riding offers spectacular views over pristine beaches and hidden coves, while our carefully-chosen seaside resorts allow us to kick back and relax at the end of the day. Along the way, learn the history and perspectives of this complex country that has undergone so much change in the past century. Our journey culminates in Saigon, the country’s elegant and enterprising southern metropolis, a fitting location to celebrate and reflect on all we have seen.

Join us on this 14-day cycling tour from the north to the south of Vietnam and take in all this country has to offer!

Itinerary

Day 1

This morning, we transfer out of Hanoi and start our ride by mid-morning. Enter a surreal landscape of limestone mountains surrounded by rice fields and natural beauty, with Vietnam’s ancient capital en route.

Day 2

Venture deep inside the jungle of Cuc Phuong National Park, visit a primate rescue centre, then cycle across open countryside to Ninh Binh. Board the sleeper train to head further south.

Day 3

Arriving in Dong Hoi on the train, cycle down the coast to the historic Vinh Moc Tunnels and then cross the former dividing line between North and South Vietnam. Arrive in Hue, the former imperial capital.

Day 4

We are off for a beautiful loop ride through Hue and its surroundings, where monuments of the last dynasty of Vietnam surprise us as we wind our way through tree-lined lanes and elevated roads in the fertile rice paddies.

Day 5

Ride around coastal lagoons with temples, ornate mausoleums, and villages, then take on the challenge of the Hai Van Pass, one of Vietnam’s most famous coastal roads. Arrive in the centre of Hoi An for the night.

Day 6

You may choose to spend the day in Hoi An exploring its seafood market, tailor shops, and historic sites, or cycle out to the My Son Sanctuary, ancient capital of the Hindu Cham culture.

Day 7

Cycle out of Hoi An through riverside hamlets to reach pristine beaches where we can enjoy the plentiful local seafood for lunch. Take ferries across river estuaries to ride towards our peaceful resort near Quang Nai.

Day 8

Ride rolling coastal roads past salt flats, rice paddies, and fishing ports, and cross some small passes en route to Quy Nhon, a thriving central Vietnamese city. Enjoy the lively atmosphere on the waterfront!

Day 9

Our ride begins along a panoramic valley road with vibrant farm life and a backdrop of green mountains, then emerges at the coast to arrive in the modern, rising city of Tuy Hoa.

Day 10

Today’s ride includes some big climbs, but the stunning views over the rugged coastline make it all worthwhile. Descents bring us into remote ports on this little-traveled headland. Transfer into the centre of Nha Trang for the night.

Day 11

Ride from Cam Ranh along the coastline of Noi Chua national park, a spectacular ride with granite formations, white sand beaches, and turquoise waters where you might have a swim along the way. Enjoy the evening at a beachside resort in Phan Rang.

Day 12

Our morning ride departs the hotel along the harbour of Phan Rang Bay and rejoins the beautiful coastline. We transfer south for the afternoon ride along sandy beaches to the top surfing destination of Mui Ne, overlooked by imposing Cham Towers.

Day 13

Wake up this morning and enjoy a swim or some tai chi before our last bike ride of the tour. Cycle the quiet coastal road to Ke Ga, head inland among dragon fruit farms, then transfer into Ho Chi Minh City, where we will celebrate the end of our Vietnamese journey!

Day 14

Enjoy some shopping in Saigon or take in the sights of this metropolis before departing for your onward travels!
