About this Cycle Tour

This road cycling odyssey takes you through a lesser-travelled region of Southeast Asia, immersing you in the vibrant and multicultural landscapes of southern Thailand and peninsular Malaysia. We ride into the backwaters of the Andaman Sea coast, wind through vast oil palm plantations, uncover heritage-infused towns, and ascend into lush, jungle-clad highlands. Along the way, we observe a cultural shift as the serene chants of Buddhist monks give way to the melodic call to prayer from Muslim mosques, while witnessing how centuries of trade, conquest and migration have shaped the lifestyles and cuisines of the Malay Peninsula.

Starting in Thailand’s Krabi Province, the first four days of our journey take us south to the Malaysian border. Highlights include peaceful rides through palm-studded countryside, a stay near the serene beach of Pak Meng, and a boat trip to a natural rock fortress rising from the ocean. After crossing into Malaysia, we pedal through the rice-rich plains and along the shores of the Straits of Malacca, arriving in George Town. Here, a rest day allows us to explore this UNESCO Heritage town, with its multi ethnic-blend of architecture and street food. The tour reaches its literal peak with an epic, leg-testing climb into the Cameron Highlands, offering stunning views of forested mountains and terraced tea plantations. Finally, we descend back into the lowlands and enter Malaysia’s bustling capital, Kuala Lumpur (KL, as the locals call it), through the backdoor, saddling off at the iconic Batu Caves. The tour ends in Kuala Lumpur.

Join us on this multi-layered, multi-cultural road biking adventure from Thailand to Malaysia!

Itinerary

Day 1

We meet at our tour hotel in Krabi Town for a trip briefing and welcome dinner.

Day 2

We depart Krabi town and traverse a vast landscape of rubber and palm oil plantations, riding on a mix of secondary roads and provincial throughways. The ride ends near the white sands of Pak Meng Beach where we stay at an eco-resort committed to the conservation of dugongs.

Day 3

We begin today’s ride by gliding under the canopies of sea oaks before veering back inland. After crossing the Trang River by boat and visiting the vintage train station of Kantang we enjoy a long journey to the estuarine landscape of Pak Bara.

Day 4

In the morning you have the option of a kayaking excursion at Prasat Hin Pan Yod, a geological feature of jagged, crenellated stone pillars encircling a serene lagoon. Back on the mainland we then cycle to the provincial capital of Satun.

Day 5

We cycle into Malaysia, surrounded by a vast expanse of protected rainforest. After a cheeky welcome with a short but steep climb over a pass, we enjoy a flat ride through the rice-growing plains, leading us to Alor Setar, the state capital of Kedah.

Day 6

Cycling south, we pass rice paddies, villages, and the shores of the Straits of Malacca. A boat crossing takes us over the mouth of the Merbok River, and we continue to Penang, where a final ferry ride brings us to George Town, a historic city famed for its mouthwatering cuisine.

Day 7

A rest day in George Town. Relax at the hotel and head out for a ramble through this historic city, renowned for its maritime history, multiculturalism and cuisine shaped by Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences.

Day 8

We transfer from George Town to kick off our ride in the state of Perak. Over the course of nearly 150 km, we navigate a long, undulating journey through forests and plantations, crossing rivers and rolling hills before reaching the laid-back city of Ipoh.

Day 9

Today marks the biggest ride of the tour as we ascend to the colonial-era hill station of the Cameron Highlands! The journey includes approximately 60 km of continuous, low-gradient climbing that challenges our legs while treating us to stunning views of jungle-clad mountains and terraced tea plantations.

Day 10

A winding 50 km descent takes us from the heights of the Cameron Highlands through tea estates and forests down to the lowlands. Afterward, we continue on a provincial throughway and secondary roads, passing through vast rubber and oil palm plantations, until we reach the town of Slim River.

Day 11

Our final ride brings us directly into Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur (KL). Weaving along main arteries and secondary roads, we reach the densely forested hills of Selangor where a last climb awaits. We end our ride at the iconic Batu Caves and transfer to our KL hotel.

Day 12

Extend your stay to discover more of Kuala Lumpur or head to the airport for your onward flight.
