About this Cycle Tour

Soaring mountains, endless forests, ancient monasteries, and a proud heritage – the Himalayan Kingdom of Bhutan beckons intrepid cyclists to traverse its breathtaking landscapes and explore its rich traditions. This epic 15-day journey is the final word in cycling tours through the 'Land of the Thunder Dragon' following the Lateral Road – Bhutan’s primary east-west route – for 785 km, from the capital Thimphu at the foot of the Himalayas to the border outpost of Samdrup Jongkhar on the edge of the Assam Plain. But it’s not just about the thrill of the ride – we also slow down to discover Bhutan’s most iconic dzongs (fortified monasteries) and immerse ourselves in a highland world of untamed woodlands, grazing herds of yaks, and rural bliss.

We begin in Paro with a visit to Bhutan’s iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, an unforgettable hike that also serves as a warm-up for our lungs and legs! The next day, based in Thimphu, we tackle the formidable Dochula Pass, rewarded with a long, winding descent into Punakha Valley, where we explore the country’s most photogenic dzong. From here we follow gushing rivers and rugged mountain passes to reach the Bumthang Valley, the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. A rest day allows us to discover the birthplace of Bhutanese Buddhism before we venture into the remote Tang and Ura valleys where glistening rice paddies blanket the rolling hills. The final stage of our adventure features simply stunning scenery as we rise and fall with the contours of the Himalayan foothills to reach Trashigang, the easternmost point on Bhutan’s Lateral Road. And finally, after a last set of gradual climbs, we relish in the grand finale: a descent from over 2,000 metres to near sea level as we roll to the Bhutanese border with the Indian state of Assam. On the last day we cross into India and drop you off in the bustling city of Guwahati, where you can catch your onward flight.

Join us on this extraordinary journey and discover the mystical land of Bhutan by bike!

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Paro, the gateway to Bhutan! We pick you up from the airport and, in the afternoon, visit the National Museum of Bhutan and the Rinpung Dzong, the first dzong (traditional Bhutanese fortified monastery) on this journey. In the evening we convene for a welcome dinner.

Day 2

We kick off the journey with a visit to Bhutan’s most iconic site: the Tiger’s Nest Monastery. We’ll hike up the steep trail, surrounded by breathtaking views of the Paro Valley, to reach this legendary cliffside monastery. Afterward, we transfer to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital.

Day 3

Today's ride takes us from Thimphu to Punakha via the iconic Dochula Pass. The 18 km ascent is rewarded with views of sacred Buddhist structures and the eastern Himalayas. We then descend 40 km along winding mountain roads into the Punakha Valley.

Day 4

Today, we explore the Punakha Valley, starting with visits to the grand Punakha Dzong and the Chhimi Lhakhang monastery. After lunch, we set off on a 30 km ride to Wangdue, crossing a swaying metal bridge and enjoying stunning views of rice terraces and wild highlands

Day 5

Choose to ride or transfer to the top of Pelela Pass, then enjoy a thrilling descent to the eastern edge of Central Bhutan, with sweeping views of rugged mountains and valleys. The ride ends in Trongsa, home to Bhutan’s largest dzong, an awe-inspiring fortress with courtyards and temples to explore.

Day 6

Today, we enter the Bumthang Valley, starting with a 30 km ride to Yongtong La Pass at 3,450 m ASL, offering stunning Himalayan views. We then descend through diverse forests and climb another pass before reaching the Bumthang River and settling in Jakar for the next two nights.

Day 7

A day off the bikes to rest and explore the Bumthang Valley, considered the spiritual heartland of Bhutan. The morning is free to relax, and in the afternoon, we visit two of the country’s oldest Buddhist monasteries, both important pilgrimage sites.

Day 8

We ride from Bumthang to the secluded Tang Valley, tackling three short mountain passes and some rougher roads. Along the way we visit a Buddhist nunnery and, upon arrival, explore an ancient heritage house amidst rice fields.

Day 9

In the morning, choose between a one-hour vehicle transfer or a 23 km ride back along yesterday's route. Afterward, we tackle a 29 km climb to Serthangla Pass, followed by an 11 km descent into the Ura Valley, where we spend the night in a traditional Bhutanese farming community.

Day 10

We ride from Ura, tackling two climbs before reaching Thrumshing La Pass at 3,780 m ASL. After soaking in views of the Donga Mountain Range, we descend cautiously and cruise through forests to Sengor, a village in a small valley. We’ll stay at a guesthouse or camp.

Day 11

The day kicks off with an exhilarating 60 km downhill from Sengor, descending 4,000 metres through dramatic landscapes into the Kuri Chuu River Valley. From there, a 26 km twisty climb along switchbacks takes us to the lively town of Mongar, where we spend the night.

Day 12

After an early climb from Mongar to Kori La Pass, we descend 40 km into the Dangme Chuu River valley, followed by a scenic 20 km ride along a ridge. A final 9 km climb leads to Trashigang, where we celebrate reaching the easternmost point of our journey.

Day 13

We’re nearing the end of our Bhutan journey, ascending 33 km to Yonphula La, home to one of the country’s four regional airports. After tackling switchbacks and passing Kanglung’s scenic hills, we undulate to the small town of Wamrong, nestled within the Himalayan foothills.

Day 14

On our final day, we descend from the eastern Himalayas, over 2,000 metres, to the lush edge of the Assam Plain in India, near sea level. This transition involves a bit of climbing initially, but culminates in an exhilarating 50 km descent to the border town of Samdrup Jongkhar.

Day 15

We cross into India and transfer you to Guwahati, the largest city in Assam. Depending on your post-tour plans, we’ll drop you at the airport or a hotel.
