About this Cycle Tour

We ride a total of 619 km over 7 cycling days. The journey takes us along well-paved roads, ensuring a smooth ride as we explore western & central Thailand’s diverse landscapes — from lush farmlands and national parks to serene riversides and rolling hills. Most days feature climbs that are predominantly gradual, with occasional short, steep bursts. Descents are equally prominent, offering a refreshing breeze! We have one full day off the bikes on Day 5. All of our rides are point-to-point, except for Day 3, when we transfer to Erawan Waterfall after our morning ride, and Day 8, when we transfer back to Bangkok after arriving at the Mae Klong Delta.

Riding through this culturally vibrant region offers plenty of opportunities to immerse yourself in local life. This tour offers a unique historical focus on Thailand’s WWII past, a chapter of history often overlooked. History enthusiasts will appreciate the visits to key sites, including the museum, war cemetery, bridge, and Hellfire Pass. For many, the most memorable moments are encounters with Thailand’s incredibly welcoming locals, always eager to wave hello and cheer us on! Accommodation is a mix of charming, cosy hotels, with five nights spent riverside and one night lakeside. On Day 7, we stay in a simpler, Thai-style rural hotel in Suan Phueng.

The trip is fully supported, and your guide’s expert knowledge of the area and terrain means that you always know what is coming up in terms of distance and difficulty. This makes a tremendous difference, as does the constant supply of water and refreshments along the way.

Itinerary

Day 1

We transfer from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi, visiting a museum on Allied POW history, the War Cemetery, and the iconic Bridge on the River Kwai. After checking into our riverside hotel, we fit our bikes and enjoy a warm-up ride through scenic farmlands framed by jungle-clad mountains, followed by a welcome dinner.

Day 2

Off to an epic start, we embark on a century ride through Kanchanaburi’s countryside, weaving through vast rice and sugarcane fields, visiting an ancient Khmer temple, and crossing the Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi rivers. The route is predominantly flat, with one challenging 5 km climb.

Day 3

We ride along the Khwae Yai River to the massive Srinakarin Dam, passing more of Kanchanaburi’s agrarian landscape and skirting the edge of Erawan National Park with its lush, rainforest-draped hills. After a challenging 4 km climb, we descend to the dam’s shores and unwind at a lakeside resort.

Day 4

This morning’s ride takes us through the fields and forests near Srinakarin Dam, featuring a ferry crossing and rolling terrain. Heading south, we cycle into Erawan National Park to visit the iconic seven-tiered Erawan Waterfall. After exploring, we transfer to our next resort for a two-night stay.

Day 5

After four days of riding, enjoy a well-earned rest day. Relax by the pool, indulge in a massage, or try bamboo rafting on the River Khwae.

Day 6

We ride through the forest-lined valley of the Khwae Noi River on an undulating road, visiting the infamous Hellfire Pass, a WWII railway cutting turned memorial. After a somber stop, we backtrack, cross the river, and arrive at tonight’s riverside resort, nestled amid jungle, misty hills, and cliffs.

Day 7

Today’s 130 km ride follows the Khwae Noi River plains before entering Ratchaburi Province. We follow rural roads, passing farms, temples, and villages. A gradual uphill finish leads to Suan Phueng, a quiet district near the low-lying mountains that form the border with Myanmar.

Day 8

Our final ride takes us from the western mountains to the Mae Klong Delta, a vibrant area of coconut plantations and fruit orchards. After a celebratory riverside lunch, we visit a famous floating market and transfer back to Bangkok where the tour ends with hotel drop offs.

Reviews

It was great to meet with our guide P'Nai again for my second tour in Thailand, Kanchanaburi Hills. A smaller group this time, but we enjoyed the contrast of the mountains versus the coastal tour. I will be back next year for my third tour.
