About this Cycle Tour

Sarawak, a Malaysian state in northeastern Borneo, provides a vivid snapshot of the island’s rich cultural and natural heritage. Taking the state capital of Kuching as our launchpad, this 8-day cycling adventure traverses the surrounding hinterlands, wetlands, jungles, and beaches for a taste of what Asia’s largest island has to offer.

Meeting in Kuching, the tour begins with a warm-up ride through the city’s mosaic of riverside quarters, from British-colonial buildings to Chinese temples and Malay markets. We then dart off into the countryside, spending our days cycling along quiet back country roads that pass plantations, rainforests, rice fields, villages, and waterways. Off-saddle highlights include spending the night in a traditional Bidayuh longhouse village, kayaking on the Sarawak River and encountering orangutans at the world-renowned Semenggoh Nature Reserve. We also discover old-world charm in the small town of Siniawan and spend two nights at a resort on the picturesque Santubong Peninsula, an area where jungle-meets-ocean in dramatic fashion! The tour ends back in Kuching.

Join us in discovering Borneo’s treasured and diverse heritage by bike!

Itinerary

Day 1

Welcome to Kuching, the state capital of Sarawak! We pick you up from the airport and in the afternoon explore the city by bike. Our loop takes us through Kuching’s Heritage Zone, local neighborhoods, a market, and includes a boat ride on a traditional ‘sampan’ boat.

Day 2

We transfer from Kuching into the countryside for our first taste of rural Sarawak. We ride on back roads meandering through fields and forests, taking us to indigenous village of Annah Rais. Here we learn about the life of the Bidayuh people and overnight in a homestay.

Day 3

Today we paddle and pedal our way north, enjoying more scenes of rural and wild Sarawak! We spend the first of two nights at a Buddhist village near Siniawan, a small heritage town with a distinct old-world charm.

Day 4

This morning we have a chance to see orangutans at the Semenggoh Nature Reserve and then visit the fabled Fairy Cave. In the afternoon we cycle back to the Kuching Buddhist Village where we spend a second night.

Day 5

We ride through the countryside and skirt along the edge of Kubah National Park to reach Telaga Air, a fishing village overlooking the coastal wetlands. After lunch we transfer to Santubong Peninsula where we spend the next two nights surrounded by ocean, jungle, and mountain.

Day 6

A free day to spend as you please. Relax by the beach, hike up Mount Santubong, or partake in a wetland cruise to spot some elusive wildlife.

Day 7

We cycle down the Santubong peninsula and cross wetlands and hinterlands to return back to Kuching. Depending on whether we saw orangutans on Day 4 or not, we either go for a second visit to Semenggoh Nature Reserve to try again or spend the afternoon at leisure in Kuching.

Day 8

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight, extend your stay in Kuching, or head elsewhere in Borneo.
