KANCHANABURI
Kanchanaburi is famous as the site of the Bridge Over the River Kwai, that same symbolic bridge that is immortalized in books and movies.

Beyond the compact provincial capital, where the Kwai Yai and the Kwai Noi rivers unite to form the River Kwai, Kanchanaburi unfolds into a rugged, beautiful landscape of mountains, waterfalls, caves, and tranquil riverside settings. A sparsely populated province, much of which has been preserved in National parks, Kanchanaburi is a treat for nature-lovers and cyclists.
What do we see? We start our ride by visiting the Bridge over River Kwai, the Railway Museum, the Death Railway, and the Kraset Caves. Then, we continue to explore Wat Prasat Muang Singh, a 12th-century Khmer temple. Scenic country backroads wind through the province before ending at the memorable and historic Hellfire Pass.
What is the riding like? Our first ride is through stunning countryside, small Thai villages, and teak plantations. The second day is full and colorful as we ride jungle trails where red, laterite roads create striking contrast against the brilliant greens of the jungle and bright blues of the sky. The scenery along this ride is awe-inspiring as limestone cliffs punctuate a rolling, mountainous skyline. Our final ride is a touch more challenging, but all the more rewarding as then we are able to cruise unforgettable descents through the jungle. Lastly, we'll ride riverside paths along the tributary of the Kwai Noi and the roads to the infamous Hellfire Pass.
Although there is some harder riding, the tour has proven suitable for most cycling levels, and it is popular with families. The entire trip is fully-supported by an air conditioned, equipped minibus.

Where do we stay? Words like charming and 'beautifully located' are horribly overused on travel websites, but in this case they are frighteningly inadequate. Pung Waan Resort really is beautifully located, on the banks of the River Kwai and River Kwai Resotel, which is a great junglestyle resort, is stacked with charm and character. It also boasts a riverside swimming pool, herbal steam room and some of the best practitioners of traditional Thai massage - perfect after a day in the saddle.
Anything else? We can't say enough about our Kanchanabuiri Bike Ride. The scenery is truly outstanding, the accommodation is simply marvelous and the riding superb. Add plenty of cultural interest and some memorable meals and you have one of the best little bike rides ever.
Of course, water, soft drinks and snacks are all included every day and SpiceRoads supplies a TREK mountain bike and helmet. The trip is fully supported by our air conditioned minibus, fully equipped with a two-way radio and Thule bike rack.
To turn a short trip into a real holiday you can add our Khao Yai Wine Country tour to this tour and receive a 5% discount on the total price.

This was our first ever cycle tour and what a wonderful three days, very well organised from booking to completion.Great guide...thank you 'Bottle', and from our support vehicle, which was a welcome sight with the boot open and all the fresh fruit, especially since we are not used to cycling in temperatures of 36 deg.
Day 2 was a lot tougher than we had expected, but we received lots of encouragement to complete the last 4km! We had a real sense of achievement at the end of day 3. Museums and trip on the railway were pretty moving. Overall, a wonderful way to see something slightly away the normal tourist experience.
I can thoroughly recommend SpiceRoads tours and if we visit Asia again would consider doing another trip with them.

Kanchanaburi Tour, September 2008
Just a small note to thank you for the fantastic trip we had, cycling in Kanchanaburi earlier this month.
Of our 2 weeks in your country, this part of our trip has been the highlight.. The guide and chauffeur, the hotels, the food, the bikes, the scenery, the people...everything was perfect and good fun.
We also liked the hotel Siam Heritage you booked for us in Bangkok.
We will definitely come back and do another tour with you!.
