Laos is the best kept cycling secret in Asia. in Southeast Asia. A mountainous country the size of France with a population of just over five million, Laos has been trapped in a time warp by a communist government determined to save its population from western ideological pollution.
Now open and welcoming tourism, much of Laos' unique culture and heritage remains in tact. In fact the whole country retains a sleepy air and its people are without doubt the most friendly and welcoming in the world who greet every bike trip with a smile.
The landscape of Northern Laos is dominated by its mountains, jungles and of course the Mekong River, which runs for 1800km through the country. The South has the Bolovan plateau, Khmer temples and thousands of islands in the Mekong River while Luang Prabang is a UNESCO World Heritage site with a relaxing atmosphere that is perfect for cycling. With empty roads, and a friendly Buddhist population and easy access from Thailand, Laos is a wonderful cycling destination.
